Canadian Couple Still Fighting Over Lottery Win

A Canadian couple from Chatham, Ontario are continuing their legal struggle over a £6 million lottery win. On September 20th, 2017 Maurice Thibeault won $6.1 million in the Lotto 6/49 Jackpot Prize, but when his partner Denise Robertson returned to their shared home one day shortly after the win she found that he had abruptly moved out. In a statement of claim filed on Monday morning, Robertson’s lawyer claimed that Thibeault had deceived Robertson, breached her trust and enriched himself at her expense and that Robertson is therefore entitled to half of the winnings plus $500,000 in damages.

Thibeault has already received a $3 million payout, received on January 4th, 2018, with the remaining balance being put on hold because of the legal proceedings. Thibeault’s lawyer says “he denies any agreement, has nothing to hide and has fully cooperated with OLGC ‘s investigation. He has voluntarily submitted to a polygraph examination, the results of which he is prepared to share to protect his reputation.” The defendant has 20 days to reply before the case goes to trial.
